Histology of Ovary

Periphery of cortex filled with primordial follicles

Mature Graafian follicles.

All stages of developement are usually visible.

Structure surrounded by cuboidal epithelium/germinal epithelium.

Histology of Fallopian Tube

ID Points

Torturous lumen

Thick muscular layer, contracts to transport oocyte.
- without this, patient is infertile/ increased chances of ectopic pregnancy

Peg Cells: secretory, from uterus to ovary. Progestrone increases number of peg cells while estrogen increases size and secretion of peg cells.

Ciliated columnar epithelium: beat from ovary to uterus

Histology of Epiddymus

ID Points

Pseudostratified solumnar epithelium with stereocilia

Smooth muscle fiber layer surrounding each tubule

Histology of Seminiferous Tubule

ID Points

Fibrous capsule of tunical albuginea

Seminiferous tubule containing Sertoli cells

Leydig cells

Histology of Vas Deferens

ID Points

Pseudostratified columnar epithelium with stereocilia

Fibroelastic lamina propria and three layers of smooth muscle

Histology of Islets of Langerhans

ID Points

Compact, spherical or egg shaped masses of pale staining cells.
  • Alpha cells peripherally placed
  • Beta cells located in the center
  • Delta cells scattered around
Islets surrounded by thin capsule of reticular fibers

Polygonal/rounded cells arranged in cords and separated by fenestrated capillaries

Histology of Adrenal Gland

Consists of cortex and medulla.

Cortex
  • zona glomerulosa: secretes mineralocorticoids
  • zona fasciculata: secretes glucocorticoids and some androgens
  • zona reticularis: secretes cortisol and DHEA. Darkly staining.
Medulla
  • secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine
  • pale staining clumps of chromaffin cells (do not take up H&E stains)

Histology of Parathyroid Gland

ID Points

Lightly staining principal cells with circular nuclei

Oxyphil cells arranged in clusters or groups

Histology of Thyroid Gland

ID Points:

Cuboid follicular cells lining gelatinous colloid

Non secretory follicles have squamous follicular cells lining colloid
